Gap's Groupon offer was pretty steep, there's no doubt about that. I would argue that with new media opportunities such as Groupon, it's important for companies to be open-minded to experiment. Laboratory failures can be successes, and I'm sure Gap learned a lot from this that they could replicate with Banana Republic or Old Navy as well.

Getting to the point, then how should Gap judge the effeciveness of this action?

1 - Was it profitable? (Per Caulkins)
2 - What was the incremental purchase for these conusmers?
3 - Was there incremental revenue for Gap? Yes, the profit % may be lower, but did they make more profit $$?
4 - What is the value of Gap being in millions of peoples minds and consideration set?

This ignores that fact that for the past two months (or longer), Gap (or its related brands) sends me a coupon for 25 to 50% off EVERY DAY. Not sure what's going on over there, but I was not in the least bit surprised to see the Groupon.

Chalk up another victory for the gambling-addiction defense. Yesterday, attorneys for Tim Donaghy, the former NBA referee who admitted to betting on basketball games he officiated, filed a psychological "evaluation" that blames his crimes on compulsive gambling. Kenny, listen, you have some pretty bad ideas. That's ok - it's not a problem, it just leaves you with some "development potential", which girls just love.
However, if you insist on lusting after this horrendous PoS, you are beyond help.

1. It is possibly the ugliest piece of industrial design I have ever seen. (I can't believe Apple didn't sue them for ruining the awesome rep generated for the color white.)
2. It is useless. Seriously, buy a book. Books look better, last longer, and won't make you go blind. (Unless it is one of those kinds of books; with pictures.)
3. It is the size of a laptop. It is as expensive as a laptop. It has the spec of a 1980s cell phone. Where do I sign up??
4. "It comes in a nice case." OK, I give up. You ARE beyond help.

My problem with Unilever's so call "brand contradiction" is that for any large FMCG company, contradictions are almost impossible to avoid.
