Jiro Dreams of Sushi

Finally got a chance to see Jiro Dreams of Sushi this weekend. An excellent documentary on an incredible sushi chef, his business, and his family. What really jumps out is how dedicated to his craft he is. Awesome movie!

SPARTA POINT: Why Do Your Knees Hurt?

Cool post from my buddy Phil Wagner of Sparta Performance on how to strengthen your knees, or more importantly, relieve some pain. This is my biggest ache & pain. I noticed that the exercise that Phil recommends is very similar to a yoga pose I do in my class at The Pad in San Francisco. Pretty neat.

Ben's Friends Butterfly

Things have slowed down a little and it's given me some time to reflect. One of my favorite things to do is read the Ben's Friends Blog and soak in all the good that is happening on the support networks. I came across this Ben's Friends post where some members had gotten together in person. They baked a cake with the Ben's Friends Logo on it. Made me very proud of the work we are doing.

ShopperSeeks - Community Finds It for You

My friend Andrea launched her new shopping website called ShopperSeeks. It's really cool. You post things you want, and then the community finds it for you.

I've used it before to buy the single greatest shirt of all time. :)

Friday Chill Music - July 20, 2012

Friday Chill Music is back with the new Norah Jones album. I'm a big fan of her soft stuff, but my favorite tracks on her new album are faster songs. Here are a couple samples.

SPARTA Performance Science; California Bay Area Athlete Training Facility

Cool video of Jeremy Lin training at Phil Wagner's high performance training facility, Sparta. I've known Phil for 17 years and he's a great guy. He combined being a doctor with high performance athletic training. He's a really bright guy. Happy to see his success.

Jeremy Lin is leaving the New York Knicks and James Dolan has blundered again - Grantland

Can't believe the Knicks aren't going to match Jeremy Lin's contract. Loved this analysis below.

"Question No. 5

Does it seem weird to anyone else that the one team willing to take on Lin's now-huge salary is the one team that has direct knowledge of just how much money an Asian star player can bring a franchise via international marketing?

I'm just asking."

youmightfindyourself:
Gartner's Hype Cycles 2011
  1. Technology Trigger: A tech breakthrough gets the ball rolling. Commercial viability is uncertain.
  2. Peak of Inflated Expectations: Early publicity and a few success stories create buzz. Most implementations do not succeed, however.
  3. Trough of Disillusionment: Interest wanes as experiments and implementations fail to deliver. Lots of companies fail.
  4. Slope of Enlightenment: 2nd and 3rd generation versions start to emerge and bigger companies start to fund pilots.
  5. Plateau of Productivity: Mainstream adoption starts to take off. The technology's broad market applicability and relevance are clearly paying off.

FUN SIZE Trailer 2012 Movie

My buddy Max Werner wrote this movie. Looks pretty darn funny.

Bill James' Popular Crime

I thoroughly enjoyed Bill James' new book, Popular Crime. For those that don't know, he's the father of the "Moneyball" movement of statistics in baseball. He started the whole thing. He's the kind of guy who has a different perspective on things and he brings that to Popular Crime. It's a good summer page turner. Enjoy.

The Break on Sergio Romo's Slider

via a guy named Max on Twitter:

Awesome graphic showing the actual break on Sergio Romo's slider. He's a little guy and doesn't throw that hard, but he's one of the best pitchers in baseball. And he's one of my favorite Giants!

Tom, Katie, and the End of Hollywood's Most Ill-Fated Marriage - Hollywood Prospectus Blog - Grantland

A little gossipy, but sometimes you need your fix. Loved the last line.

Tom, Katie, and the End of Hollywood's Most Ill-Fated Marriage - Hollywood Prospectus Blog - Grantland:
"There's all kinds of places Katie Holmes can go with her life starting now. She's been granted a mulligan on the last five years of her career. She apparently designed a fashion line called Holmes & Yang, from which she fired Tom's daughter Bella two months ago (foreshadowing). Katie should headline a Broadway revival of Ibsen's A Doll's House or play a female version of Liam Neeson in Taken. For Tom Cruise there's only one place left to go: Quentin Tarantino."

The Coffin-Maker Benchmark - NYTimes.com

Such a good article. The world is becoming a better place very quickly. Maybe faster than ever.

The Coffin-Maker Benchmark - NYTimes.com:
"“Before, a lot of people were dying of AIDS,” said Moeketsi Monamela, a 33-year-old coffin maker here in Maseru, the capital of the mountainous kingdom of Lesotho. A half-dozen years ago, he sometimes crafted 20 coffins a month, he said. Now, he typically sells five or six.
“Now there is medication, so fewer people are dying of AIDS,” Monamela explained. “I’m not very happy because this is my future.”"

Found this by following Paul Graham on Twitter.

It sounds crazy, but Alec Baldwin's podcast is fantastic. He's a great interviewer and these stars really open up. Can't recommend it enough.

Windows 8 Pro Upgrade Price: $40

"disruption" is right. Microsoft competing on price? Holy cow. Wonder what their stock will do.

Daring Fireball

Brandon LeBlanc, Microsoft:

We set out to make it as easy as possible for everyone to upgrade to Windows 8. Starting at general availability, if your PC is running Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 you will qualify to download an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for just $39.99 in 131 markets. And if you want, you can add Windows Media Center for free through the "add features" option within Windows 8 Pro after your upgrade.

Harry McCracken:

By comparison, the Windows 7 Pro upgrade is $199.99; even the less full-featured Windows 7 Home Premium one lists for $119.99.

Disruption.
